Five material groups, and what each is for
Every product page names its shell, lining, coating and hardware. This page explains the groups those names belong to, and how to clean each one without ruining it.
Recycled polyester twill
600D twill woven from 100% post-consumer content, with a coated 210D ripstop lining. It holds a compartment shape without stiffening, and the tight weave means an elastic loop stitched into it does not migrate.
Care
Wipe the lining with a damp cloth and mild soap. Hand wash the shell in cool water if it needs more than that. Never machine wash — agitation deforms the compartment stitching. Air dry fully open.
Moulded EVA shell
Compression-moulded EVA with a bonded twill face and a 4 mm foam-backed tricot lining. It is the only construction in the range that keeps its shape under a packed suitcase lid.
Care
Wipe inside and out. Do not machine wash, do not tumble dry, and keep it away from direct heat, which can soften the moulding.
PET and PP containers
Unpigmented PET bottle bodies with PP closures and silicone gaskets. Unpigmented so you can see the level, and so nothing leaches colour into what you decanted.
Care
Hand wash in warm water with mild soap, rinse thoroughly, and air dry standing open. Not dishwasher safe: the heat distorts the neck threads and the seal stops working.
Platinum-cured silicone
55 Shore A, soft enough to squeeze flat and firm enough to grip a bottle by its waist. It does not perish the way cheaper silicone does when it meets an oil-based cleanser.
Care
Hand wash, air dry open. Silicone picks up scent over time; a soak in warm water with bicarbonate of soda clears most of it.
ABS trays and dividers
Injection-moulded ABS with a matte soft-touch face and, where something needs to sit still, a flocked base pad. Drawer divider strips are semi-rigid PVC, notched so you can cut them to a drawer.
Care
Wipe clean. Do not put them in a dishwasher and do not use solvent cleaners, which craze the matte face.
What a water-resistant coating actually does
The lining carries a PU finish that beads a splash and wipes clean. That is the entire claim, and we would rather be dull about it than have you trust a pouch with an open bottle.
- It resists splashes and short contact with a wet counter.
- It does not survive inversion with an unsealed bottle inside.
- It does not survive immersion or a long soak.
- It carries no waterproofing rating, because it has not been tested to one.
Three rules that cover everything
Wipe first
Nine problems out of ten are a damp cloth and mild soap.
Never machine wash
The compartment stitching is what you are paying for. A drum destroys it.
Dry open
Zipped shut and damp is how a lining picks up a smell it keeps.
